Ingredient Substitutions

  • Hawaiian Rolls: Brioche rolls or challah bread can be used, though they won’t have the same inherent sweetness.
  • Half & Half: You can substitute with whole milk, or a mix of milk and heavy cream. For a dairy-free option, unsweetened almond milk or oat milk can work, but the texture might be slightly different.
  • Berries: Any seasonal fruit will work. Sliced bananas, peaches, or even a dollop of jam are delicious additions.
  • Maple Syrup: Agave nectar or any preferred syrup is a fine substitute.

How to Make It

Step 1: Prepare the Rolls

Cut each of the 12 Hawaiian sweet rolls in half horizontally, creating 24 individual pieces. Set these aside on a plate while you prepare the batter. This ensures the rolls are ready to dip and cook efficiently.

Step 2: Whisk the Batter

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, vigorously whisk together the 3 large eggs, 1/2 cup of half & half, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Continue whisking until the mixture is smooth, well-combined, and slightly frothy. This forms the base for your delicious French toast.

Step 3: Melt the Butter

Place a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add the 3 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and allow it to melt completely, tilting the pan to coat the bottom surface evenly. Ensure the butter is shimmering but not browned.

Step 4: Dip and Cook the Bites

Working with one piece of roll at a time, quickly dip each half into the egg batter, flipping it over to coat both sides. Do not let the rolls soak; a quick dip is all that’s needed. Immediately place the dipped roll pieces into the preheated, buttered skillet. Repeat this process with the remaining roll halves, fitting as many as you can comfortably into the skillet without overcrowding. If your skillet is smaller, you will need to cook the bites in batches, using approximately half the butter for each batch.

Step 5: Brown and Serve

Let the french toast bites cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Watch for a beautiful golden-brown color. Once one side is perfectly browned, use tongs to gently flip each piece and cook the other side until golden. If needed, you can increase the heat slightly to medium-high to achieve that perfect crust, but be mindful not to burn them. Once cooked through and golden, remove the bites from the skillet. Serve immediately with a generous drizzle of maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar if desired, and a heaping side of fresh, vibrant berries.

Warming Oven Method (Optional): If you are cooking in batches and want to keep the earlier cooked bites warm, preheat your oven to its lowest setting (around 175-200°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and have a large piece of foil ready. Place the cooked french toast bites in a single layer on the parchment paper, then loosely tent the baking sheet with the foil. As you cook more batches, add the warm bites to this sheet.

Tips for Success

  • Don’t over-soak the rolls in the batter. A quick dip ensures they cook through without becoming soggy.
  • Use fresh, good-quality Hawaiian rolls for the best flavor and texture.
  • Adjust the heat of your skillet as needed. Too high and the outside burns before the inside warms; too low and they won’t get golden brown.
  • If cooking in batches, keep the finished bites warm in a single layer on a baking sheet in a low oven.
  • Have all your toppings ready before you start cooking, as these bites are best served immediately.

Variations

  • Lemon-Ricotta Cream: Mix ricotta cheese with a little lemon zest and sweetener for a creamy topping.
  • Chocolate Drizzle: Melt some chocolate chips and drizzle over the finished bites.
  • Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle with chopped toasted pecans or walnuts for added texture.
  • Cookie Butter Dip: Serve with a side of cookie butter for dipping.
  • Seasonal Fruit: Swap berries for sliced peaches, pears, or apples sautéed with cinnamon.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with your favorite maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Top with a generous assortment of fresh berries like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
  • A light dusting of powdered sugar adds an elegant touch.
  • Pair with a side of crispy turkey bacon or sausage for a complete breakfast.
  • Enjoy with a glass of fresh orange juice or a hot cup of coffee.

Storage & Reheating

  • Storage: Store leftover French toast bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Ensure they have cooled completely before storing.
  • Reheating: For best results, reheat in a toaster oven or a conventional oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until warmed through and slightly crispy. Microwaving can make them soft.

FAQS

  • Can I use regular bread instead of Hawaiian rolls? Yes, but the flavor and texture will be different. Regular bread will be less sweet and might absorb more batter.
  • Why are my French toast bites soggy? This usually happens if the bread soaks in the batter for too long, or if the skillet isn’t hot enough when they are added.
  • Can I make the batter ahead of time? Yes, the batter can be made and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Whisk it again before using.
  • How do I prevent the French toast from sticking? Make sure your skillet is properly preheated and that you use enough butter, ensuring it coats the pan evenly.
  • Can I freeze these? Yes, once completely cooled, freeze the bites in a single layer on a baking sheet until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 1 month. Reheat from frozen.

Scale

12 Hawaiian Sweet Rolls (cut in half, total of 24 pieces)

3 large eggs`

1/2 cup half & half

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

¼ teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Cut each Hawaiian roll in half and place them to the side on a plate.

12 Hawaiian Sweet Rolls

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half & half, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well-mixed and combined.

3 large eggs`,1/2 cup half & half,1 tablespoon granulated sugar,2 teaspoons vanilla extract,1 teaspoon ground cinnamon,¼ teaspoon nutmeg,¼ teaspoon salt

Melt the butter in a large skillet pan over medium heat.

3 tablespoons butter

Dip the rolls, one at a time, into the egg batter and flip them over quickly (don’t let them soak!), and then place it inside the preheated skillet.

Repeat with the remaining pieces or however many can fit inside the skillet pan.

* If you’re quick you can easily do several pieces at once when dipping and flipping them inside the egg batter.

* If the skillet pan is smaller then you’ll want to cook the french toast pieces in batches. If doing batches I recommend using half the butter for each batch.

Let them cook for about 2-3 minutes per side and flip them once they’re golden brown.

* If needed, turn the heat up to medium-high to get them nicely golden browned. It’s easiest to use tongs to flip and turn the french toast pieces.

Serve immediately with syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh berries.
